The Bay Area embodied carbon community
Biobased Materials
StopWaste in Alameda County commissioned a report by Arup to assess the potential for biobased building materials. Their landscape survey showed four key materials with highest potential: straw, bamboo, fire-risk wood, and hemp. The report contains example products for each of these materials.

Adhesives for Biobased Materials
Particularly among highly processed composites, bio-based construction materials rely on adhesives to bind components together. It is critical to understand the role and impact of these adhesives. As follow-up research to the Biobased Materials report above, Arup produced a guidance playbook is intended to address the broader range of bio-based construction materials, with particular focus on wood products, due to the expansion of mass timber use in the Bay Area.
